Our Story

J. Donkin Bakers commenced trading in 1922 at Woodhorn Road, Ashington by Jack Donkin. Following the retirement of Christopher Donkin, Great Great Grandson of Jack in 2014, today the business is owned and operated by Bakers Pantry led by David Crook who has over 30 years’ experience within the bakery industry. The vision for the future is to ensure the bakery continues to produce high quality products using local sourced produce, carry on traditional methods and recipes from the past generations and create new recipes for future generations. We aim to open new retail bakery shops across the North East, bringing back traditional bakery quality and experience to the High Street.

The business comprises of 7 retail outlets in total. There are 3 Bakers Pantry shops across Ashington and Morpeth, and a further 2 stores within the Lakes & Dales Cooperatives at Seaton Delaval. In December 2015, due to consumer demand, the Andersons brand was brought back to the high street and there are now stores based in both Ashington and Newbiggin. All stores sell a range of quality, freshly baked products such as savoury pastries, breads and confectionary. The wholesale side of the business produces bespoke produce for the individual customer needs. Our dedicated team follow all traditions, our bakery starts in the early hours of the morning to ensure all of our products are freshly baked and delivered to our customers ensuring the highest quality.
